Pocket Squares

Few things can complete an outfit like a pocket square. It can complement your tie, or just add some contrasting flair. As a bonus they are easy to make.

Materials

  • Fabric, preferably silk, but anything woven works.
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors or Rotary cutter

Procedure

The important part of making a pocket square is that you know how to sew a rolled hem. Here is a video teaching this:
The first step is to cut the fabric. Size of pocket squares is not standard, and is partially personal preference. I think about 10-13 inches square is a good size. However for complex folds a larger size may be needed.
Once the fabric is cut press it before starting to sew. Not pressing the rolled hem is important for it to maintain its unique shape. With that begin sewing the hem. The corners are the most difficult part, and may require some working to look good.

Folding

Once your pocket square is complete it is time to fold it. There are many different folds. I like the simple puff, it adds some sprezzatura to an outfit. Sam Hober has a great list of tutorials on folding pocket squares.
